Fetterman: 'Columbia can pay for its failure' with $400M in grants axed

Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) criticized leaders at Columbia College for allegedly permitting antisemitic rhetoric to unfold all over campus, which has resulted within the establishment being stripped of $400 million in federal grants.

“Columbia let antisemitism run amok to cater to lunatic fringe and paid provocateurs. Leadership allowed those assholes to take over the campus and terrorize Jewish students,” Fetterman wrote in a Friday put up on social platform X.

“Now, Columbia pays for its failure and I support that.”

Previous within the day, the Division of Justice, Division of Well being and Human Services and products, Division of Schooling and the U.S. Common Services and products Management mentioned they’d revoke investment over the “continued inaction in the face of persistent harassment of Jewish students.”

A spokesperson from the college mentioned Columbia is reviewing the subject and dealing to deal with the government’s issues.

“We are reviewing the announcement from the federal agencies and pledge to work with the federal government to restore Columbia’s federal funding,” the spokesperson mentioned in a remark. 

“We take Columbia’s legal obligations seriously and understand how serious this announcement is and are committed to combating antisemitism and ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our students, faculty, and staff.”

Fetterman has lengthy been important of the demonstrations on the college and prompt Columbia’s former president to renounce over protesters’ tent encampments around the New York Town faculty grounds. 

“I fully agree with the White House — these ‘protests’ are antisemitic, unconscionable, and dangerous. Add some tiki torches and it’s Charlottesville for these Jewish students,” Fetterman wrote in a remark closing 12 months.

“To @Columbia President Minouche Shafik: do your job or resign so Columbia can find someone who will,” he persevered.

Minouche Shafik, the college’s former president, resigned 4 months later bringing up herself as the topic of threats and abuse. 

The Trump management has pledged to crack down on scholars, immigrants and universities which might be complicit in antisemitic expressions. 

Secretary of Schooling Linda McMahon mentioned Friday the dept will rescind price range from establishments discovered to be out of compliance with antidiscrimination rules. 

“Since October 7, Jewish students have faced relentless violence, intimidation, and anti-Semitic harassment on their campuses – only to be ignored by those who are supposed to protect them,” McMahon, who was once lately showed, mentioned in a remark. “Universities must comply with all federal antidiscrimination laws if they are going to receive federal funding.
